About Indian Patent Office

The Indian Patent Office (IPO) is part of the office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and is responsible for the grant of patents in India. Patent Office was established in India 150 years ago and has undergone significant changes ever since.

The Patents Act 1970 was amended to fulfill the obligations of international agreements and treaties to which India became a party. The Government of India invested on infrastructure, both physical and manpower during the past decade, establishing a strong intellectual property regime in the country. The Indian Patent Office was recognized as an International Searching Authority and International Preliminary Examining Authority under the PCT and started functioning from 15th October 2013. We have access to a comprehensive collection of patent and non-patent literature that covers the PCT minimum documentation. Professionally qualified and skilled Examiners are our assets. IPO has established a Quality Management System covering technical and administrative tasks of the office. Fully electronic processing system ensures speedy disposal and dissemination of information on real time basis.
